According to the European Environment Agency, for the last twenty years, renewable energy production and consumption quickly grew in the EU due to the implementation of policies and technological advances, such as solar panels, electric cars and wind turbines, which have become part of our surroundings. Consequently, greenhouse gas emissions have been decreasing since 1990, and the EU reached its 20% renewable energy target in 2020, arriving to 22.5% in 2022. Renewable energy plays a crucial role in Europe’s capability to reach climate neutrality by 2050.
However, fossil fuels remain the largest source of energy and must be replaced to further the reduction of greenhouse gases’ emissions and to increase Europe’s energy independence. The European Green Deal and its policy initiatives aims to fasten the needed transition, supporting its implementation in key sectors, such as transport and heating, which have been more challenging than electricity.
The Renewable Energy Directive proposes a 32% binding minimum target for the share of renewable energy by 2030, but the prospects of achieving this goal are currently uncertain. To tackle the disruption created by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the European Commission presented the REPowerEU Plan, proposing an ambitious target of 45% by 2030 to decrease the dependency on imported fossil fuels.
