A star on a chip: 4K-MEMS and the University of Trento win €2.5M from the EIC to bring infrared sensing into everyday devices

A glowing 4K-MEMS infrared emitter mounted in a laboratory test setup

Many molecules have characteristic infrared signatures that can reveal their presence and concentration, from biochemical markers such as lactate to CO₂ in the air. Together with the University of Trento, 4K-MEMS has secured a €2.5 million grant from the European Innovation Council’s Transition programme to bring its miniature infrared emitter a big step closer to market.
